What
is Pilates?
Pilates
is a system of exercises designed to strengthen the core
muscles of the body, most specifically the stabilizers of
the spine. Because many of the movements require increased
range of motion and elongation of the muscles, Pilates
greatly improves flexibility. Probably the most valuable
attribute to Pilates Training is the correction of muscle
imbalances many times caused by poor posture, sports
specific activities or ineffective workout programs. These
muscle imbalances over time can cause stress points to any
part of the spine, usually occurring in the neck and lower
back area. For this reason, Pilates plays a strong role in
the rehabilitation of our broken bodies either caused from
injury or from a lifetime of bad habits.
What
are the basic principles of Pilates?
Pilates
principles are centered on spinal alignment. This is
accomplished by properly positioning the Hips, Rib Cage,
Head, Neck and Shoulders. By aligning these key areas of the
body (Neutral Alignment) clients are able to perform
exercises correctly and over time remove stress points in
the structural body.
What
are the benefits?
The
benefits of Pilates primarily include core strengthening and
improved flexibility. In addition clients are educated on
the importance of posture and spinal positioning.
Why
is Pilates different than other forms of training?
While
other forms of exercise may strengthen the trunk or core of
the body, few will properly align the spine and focus
DIRECTLY on the muscles that maintain "neutral
alignment". In addition, Pilates approach to
stretching begins with building stability as its foundation.
Unlike other forms of stretching Pilates uses external
resistance through the use of springs and always places
emphasis on proper positioning.
What Pilates Equipment exists?
The most
popular piece of Pilates equipment is known as the
Reformer. A fully equipped Pilates Studio, however will
also include: Cadillac, Stability Chair and several
variations of Barrels.
See pictures
of our equipment in the right column of this page.
Will
Pilates help with neck and back pain?
Most times back and neck issues are caused by misalignment
or muscle imbalances. Once a diagnosis has been made
by your doctor and structural issues are ruled out, almost
always core strengthening and stretching -with careful
attention to spinal alignment are prescribed to help improve
symptoms. Keep in my mind, this is the sole purpose of a
Pilates program.
I
see a Chiropractor regularly, will Pilates help?
YES!
While your Chiropractor helps to move the bones into
position, Pilates will help strengthen the muscles needed to
HOLD the adjustment.
Who
can benefit by Pilates?
The
exercises in Pilates are all about correcting posture, can
you think of anyone who couldn't benefit? Men and
women, the youth and elderly, the athlete and novice - all
can greatly benefit from Pilates.
Do
I need prior experience to begin?
Participants
do not require prior experience. Whether you've worked out
your entire life, played sports or are just starting,
Pilates is not only a safe route but a wise one!
